What EDR is
Regular antivirus mostly looks for known-bad files. Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) sits on your computer and also watches behavior: a program encrypting your photos, a script running from a download, something trying to spread. If it sees that, it can stop the process and clean up without you reinstalling Windows.
